Nothings changed and Not my Business Essay Example

Nothings changed and Not my Business Paper The most overwhelming subject in the two sonnets is that of sheer distress. The thought of expectation and sadness is adequately passed on, speaking to the writers outrage at the nonappearance of popular government and composure in the public eye. They battle to limit this disappointment towards the unbelievable political and social prejudice made against ethnic minorities in the manner they have been. Be that as it may, specifically, the manner in which the persecuted manage the out of line and partial approaches introduced into society varies significantly between the sonnets. In Nothings Changed the artist comes back to the no man's land that was before his home, and remembers the outrage he felt when the zone was first annihilated. When faced with the new inns and the cafés, which are encircled by the neediness and enduring his profound substance compels him to need to pulverize the eatery with a stone or a bomb. This causes him to mirror that regardless of the changing political circumstance, there are as yet gigantic disparities among blacks and whites. Nothings changed. In this manner, the quelled message in Nothings Changed is the Whereas, in Not my business an alternate message is passed on, as in the first place refrains Osundare sits back, appreciative he is sheltered, as everyone around him are removed. In the long run, he also is removed and the peruser is left with the upsetting and unsatisfying closure. The sonnet runs corresponding to a statement which came through from the most wrecking human clash ever, World War Two, Edmund Burke once said that all that is required for wickedness to triumph is for acceptable men to sit idle. Additionally, the two sonnets have a paramount last line. Afrika composes Nothings Changed for his last line and in light of the fact that the last line and the title are the equivalent, a cycle is proposed, that essentially nothings changed, and never will. It additionally recommends that he is coming back to region six after his crusading, and finds regardless of the evacuation of the considerable number of whites just signs, the town is as yet loaded up with partiality. In Not my business. The topic of social division and the artists considerations on them is a reasonable one all through all the sonnets. In Nothings Changed, Tatamkhulu Afrika remarks on how despite the fact that area six has finished its politically-sanctioned racial segregation, individuals are as yet preferential towards individuals of color, when he composes whites just hotel. No sign says it is: however we know where we have a place Afrika builds up a feeling of edginess and aching for a spot or perfect society. He is edgy for area six preceding the politically-sanctioned racial segregation, when individuals all things considered and convictions lived calmly, as he says No board says it may be: yet my feet know. He ends up aching for the past, when he was an individual from the African National Congress, battling against politically-sanctioned racial segregation. The indignation of the writer comes through as he ponders his adolescence, his hands consume for a stone, a bomb, to shudder down the glass of the Inn, as he did when he was more youthful. Each of the three sonnets analyze two different ways of life. In Nothings Changed, Afrika contrasts his life and the ANC, battling for equivalent rights, to his life now, after his triumph, where bias despite everything remains. Moreover, through consistency and guideline in the structure the writers mirror the steadiness of government system and progressing racial mentalities. Notwithstanding the ethically out of line and unconfirmed separation which despite everything exists, there are no breaks in the sonnets and this speaks to the manner in which prejudice has gotten inserted into society and people groups lives, to such an extent that the writers see no motivation to stop the familiarity of the sonnet as a result of it. Then again, this consistency in the structure could identify with the enthusiastic condition of the artist and their response to the shameful acts advancing in the sonnet. In Nothings Changed the structure seems controlled, inferring the artist is figuring out how to hold his feelings under tight restraints and acknowledge the prejudice in South Africa. In any case, inside the verses there are sporadic line breaks and accentuation giving the sonnet a feeling of unevenness, recommending there are interior issues which the artist is battling to control as the sonnet turns out to be logically uncalled for. These line breaks and anomalies may, on the other hand, represent the way that the administration guarantee to have finished the politically-sanctioned racial segregation and it shows up finished, anyway there are as yet hidden issues which exist in the public eye. Furthermore, the accentuation makes speed and accordingly strain, which makes a feeling of vagueness; the consistency of the verse development, bringing out the idea of isolates realism, standing out from the uncontrollably fluctuating line length, recommending that the artist is attempting to contain his feeling. This structure effectively exemplifies the inside clashes existing in South Africa. Though, In Not my Business the refrains seem normal to speak to the unappeasable government system, delivered on the persecuted people groups. The redundancy of the sentence lengths and verses infers that, regardless of the passing and hijacking, the writer doesn't see it sufficiently significant to break the reliable structure. This powerful message upgrades the possibility of the entire sonnet that if there isn't a will to dissent, wickedness will go on and at last succeed. At last, in the last refrain the indented not many lines of what business is it of mine? , which appear to have been finding the writer all through, are supplanted with a full quit speaking to conclusiveness. At last, the utilization of phonetic procedures, most transcendently the utilization imagery, is best in helping the two artists pass on the important and varying messages planned. A significant picture in Nothings changed is that of the glass which closes out the speaker in the sonnet. It is an image of the divisions of shading, and class frequently something very similar in South Africa. As he moves in an opposite direction from it toward the finish of the sonnet, Afrika considers himself to be a kid once more, who has left the engraving of his little, mean mouth on the glass. He needs a stone, a bomb to break the glass he may wish actually to break the window of this motel, yet this is plainly implied from an emblematic perspective. He needs to separate the framework, which isolates white and dark, rich and poor, in South Africa. In Not my Business the picture of the jeep is successful in embodying the legislature as compromising and massive. The jeep is representative of the foundation all through the sonnet, it seems a like a predator, as it stuffed him down the stomach suggesting they are huge and merciless toward the people in question. The administration appear to be an unremarkable and indifferent dictator, who through paying off the individuals of their sweet potato are authorizing a savage system that, much like the Nazi one, sees individuals removed arbitrarily, beyond words. The range and degree of the jargon utilized varies for the most part between Not my Business and Nothing Changed. In Nothings changed Afrika is point by point in his depiction of the no man's land. The purple blooming speaks to the White populace toward the start of the sonnet. The purple suggests eminence and class speaking to their boss situation in the public arena. The blooming infers development and advancement, maybe, socially, the issues deteriorating and the prejudice is getting more grounded. This compares the friendly weeds which identifies with the Blacks position, the manner in which they are strange and undesirable in the public eye. The Blacks have expelled them like a proprietor of a nursery would evacuate a weed. In addition, the pictures in the sonnet of the no man's land itself, the costly café, and the working keeps an eye on bistro are strongly differentiated to make a feeling of division, reflecting the division inside the nation itself and inside the artists mind. The distinct contrast In Nothings Changed, Afrika says the Inn is flaring like a banner significance it is incredibly brilliant. Flaring has another importance: spreading continuously outwards, which is applicable to Afrikas emotions, as the Inns whites just partiality is spreading all through locale six.

The Movie I Heart Huckabees Essay - 1301 Words

The movie I Heart Huckabees was interesting, to say the least. The movie centered around two detectives, a husband and wife duo, who were existentialists. Existentialism is defined as â€Å"a philosophy that emphasizes individualism, freedom, and choice† (Existentialism - By Branch / Doctrine). In the film, the two detectives, Vivian and Bernard Jaffe, were sought out by a young man named Albert, who was looking for answers. He wanted to know why he kept running into this particular â€Å"African man.† He bumped into the man three times and thought that the coincidences had to have a deeper meaning, which is why he went to the office of Vivian and Bernard Jaffe. These two â€Å"existential detectives† followed Albert around (sometimes discretely, sometimes not so much) to learn his habits and get a better idea of his so-called â€Å"personality.† This brings me to the next point, does personality even exist? In the beginning of the semester, we as a class were posed with the question as to whether or not personality even exists. Personality, as described by the textbook, is â€Å"someone’s usual pattern of behavior, feelings, and thoughts† (Twenge and Campbell, 2017). After reading the textbook, Personality Psychology by Jean M. Twenge and W. Keith Campbell, I believe that personality does, in fact, exist. According to the book, personality psychology aims to analyze â€Å"who we [as individuals] are and how we got to be that way† (Twenge and Campbell, 2017). Radicalism of American Revolut Essay Example For Students

Radicalism of American Revolut Essay By: Robert Smith Radicalism of the American Revolution By Gordon S. Wood Gordon Woods Radicalism of the American Revolution is a book that extensively covers the origin and ideas preceding the American Revolution. Woods account of the Revolution goes beyond the history and timeline of the war and offers a new encompassing look inside the social ideology and economic forces of the war. Wood explains in his book that America went through a two-stage progression to break away from the Monarchical rule of the English. He believes the pioneering revolutionaries were rooted in the belief of an American Republic. However, it was the radical acceptance of democracy that was the final step toward independence. The transformation between becoming a Republic, to ultimately becoming a democracy, is where Woods evaluation of the revolution differs from other historians. He contributes such a transformation to the social and economic factors that faced the colonists. While Gordon Wood creates a persuasive argument in his book, he does however neglect to consider other contributing factors of the revolution. It is these neglected factors that provide opportunity for criticism of his book. The overall feeling one gets from reading Woods book is that republicanism was not a radical concept to the American colonists. Wood believed the American colonists had a deep- rooted concept of Republicanism that existed before revolutionary ideas were conceived. The idea of republicanism could be seen in the colonial belief in independence and self-sacrifice. These principles were the founding forces that led to the beginning of the revolution. Wood would seem to believe that these founding forces Smith pg.2 were not as radical as the transformation to democratic thought. It is here that Wood points out the uncontrollable social and economic forces that leads republican thought to the progression of democracy. Wood believes the revolution was meant for the elite (gentlemen) and not for the colonists themselves. It is the colonist self-motivated social and economic interests, which leads to the transformation they had been yearning for. Wood contributes several different social and economic factors to the transformation. The first social factor that led to the reformation was the colonist self-interest. The colonist self-interest seemed to conflict with principles of republicanism. The self-interest of the colonists led to capitalistic traits, while the republican idea of self-sacrifice was put on the back burner. It was natural for the colonists to want to advance their social and economic standards to that of the elite. The problem being republican virtues had to be sacrificed to gain individual prominence. Social factors played an important role in the transformation from a monarchy to a democracy. However, there were also economic factors that played an intricate role. One such economic force was trade interaction among the colonists. People became independent on one another for their lively hood. Through inner-commerce people began to share the same interests and the same goals. This was a change from previous republican views on trade. People became inherently dependent on one another instead of being dependent on the government. At this point in history you can begin to see the social ties of Americans grow stronger. Wood writes on the changing economy of the early 19th century, America suddenly emerged a prosperous, scrambling, enterprising society not because of the constitution was created or because a few leaders formed a Smith pg.3 national bank, but because ordinary people, hundreds of thousands of them began working harder to make money and get ahead.(Wood 325). It is economic factors such as this one that will be the driving force, which bonds Americans together in the early 19th century. .u8a0a0472264a9e17744243226942544f , .u8a0a0472264a9e17744243226942544f .postImageUrl , .u8a0a0472264a9e17744243226942544f .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u8a0a0472264a9e17744243226942544f , .u8a0a0472264a9e17744243226942544f:hover , .u8a0a0472264a9e17744243226942544f:visited , .u8a0a0472264a9e17744243226942544f:active { border:0!important; } .u8a0a0472264a9e17744243226942544f .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u8a0a0472264a9e17744243226942544f { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u8a0a0472264a9e17744243226942544f:active , .u8a0a0472264a9e17744243226942544f:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u8a0a0472264a9e17744243226942544f .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u8a0a0472264a9e17744243226942544f .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u8a0a0472264a9e17744243226942544f .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u8a0a0472264a9e17744243226942544f .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u8a0a0472264a9e17744243226942544f:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u8a0a0472264a9e17744243226942544f .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u8a0a0472264a9e17744243226942544f .u8a0a0472264a9e17744243226942544f-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u8a0a0472264a9e17744243226942544f:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Overpopulation Essay Wood builds his argument by supporting his claims with personal accounts as well as using documents of that time period. It is pieces of evidence such as these that gives Wood a particular insight into the revolution. This insight at first glance would be hard to deny. However, Woods lack of concrete evidence gives historians a chance to critique his account. Wood seems to place a lot of confidence on individual historical accounts of the revolution. Not only does he rely on these individual accounts, but the people he relies on fall under the same race, gender, and social class. Barbara Clark Smith, a curator at the Smithsonian when Woods book was published, comments on Woods narrow-minded accounts, .to a striking extent Wood keeps the Revolution in the hands of the elite. It is not simply that elite and privileged sources are the ones Wood generally cites, the ones whose opinions he trusts. (Smith 3). As Smith points out the problem with relying on limited sources when writing a book is the one-sided story you almost always get. Smith later points out in her review that Wood not only relies on a limited source base, but he also neglects to mention other racial and gender forces that played an important role in the revolution. Smith writes on Woods absent account to abolish slavery, Woods revolution takes too much credit. It slights the agency of those who did struggle to end slavery and makes it difficult to comprehend or even credit those who opposed Smith pg.4 abolition. (Smith 5). As Smith points out there are obvious neglecting aspects to Woods book. It is important to note that Woods intent on leaving out such forces is to get at the overall ideas and ideologies behind the revolution, and not so much the individual players of the revolution. The next problem with Woods account is his dereliction to include traditional forces, which played an intricate part of the revolution. Wood neglects to mention the series of acts and events such as the Boston Tea Party as a driving force for the revolutionary movement. As Smith points out only twenty of the 369 pages is dedicated to the actual revolutionary struggle (Smith 3). Once again Wood is trying to range his text to include forces that span before and after the revolution. Wood, rather than rely on the importance of fighting the revolution, cites changes both socially and economically to get at the deeper importance of the American Revolution. Wood furthers his neglect on traditional forces by depersonalizing the heroism that personifies the struggle of the American Revolution. Take for instance the painting done by John Trumbull, which depicts the surrender of Lord Cornwallis at the Battle of Yorktown. Trumbull depicts the American soldiers as proud, and paints the American flag as bright and waving. A painting such as this one reminds us of the struggle to gain independence as well as the triumphant victory against British forces. When reading Woods book it is hard to get a feeling of what the people were like during the Revolution. Wood takes his book and moves the revolution into the hands of a mass movement, instead focusing on individual accomplishments. While this may give Woods book some claim of legitimacy, I feel it is equally important to note individual Smith pg.5 accomplishments during the Revolution. For instance in Woods history of the Revolution, there is no evidence of Paul Reveres existence. As David Fischer points out in his book Paul Reveres Ride, Revere played a significant role in the saving of lives and has since become an American hero. Fischer makes the claim that it might have been the single-handed effort of Paul Revere that turned the tide in favor of America during the Revolution. Revere is not the only hero that has been left out of the Wood text. Countless other individual efforts by men such as, George Washington, Sam Adams, and Thomas Jefferson, all have been neglected. .ua331a8d8243639d4a806502b724264a4 , .ua331a8d8243639d4a806502b724264a4 .postImageUrl , .ua331a8d8243639d4a806502b724264a4 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ua331a8d8243639d4a806502b724264a4 , .ua331a8d8243639d4a806502b724264a4:hover , .ua331a8d8243639d4a806502b724264a4:visited , .ua331a8d8243639d4a806502b724264a4:active { border:0!important; } .ua331a8d8243639d4a806502b724264a4 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ua331a8d8243639d4a806502b724264a4 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ua331a8d8243639d4a806502b724264a4:active , .ua331a8d8243639d4a806502b724264a4:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ua331a8d8243639d4a806502b724264a4 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ua331a8d8243639d4a806502b724264a4 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ua331a8d8243639d4a806502b724264a4 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ua331a8d8243639d4a806502b724264a4 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ua331a8d8243639d4a806502b724264a4:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ua331a8d8243639d4a806502b724264a4 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ua331a8d8243639d4a806502b724264a4 .ua331a8d8243639d4a806502b724264a4-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ua331a8d8243639d4a806502b724264a4:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Frankenstein and Morality Essay Despite, the fact that these men have been recognized throughout history as playing important roles in the Revolution, Wood does not seem to find their personal accomplishments worthy enough for his book. Woods attempt to depersonalize the war was successful. However, I feel it was this successful attempt that led Woods book to have a dehumanizing effect on the Revolution. I believe that Woods book could have been better had he mentioned at least some of the traditional forces that were significant during the Revolution. I do not feel that Woods book can stand on its own. It takes notation of such heros as Paul Revere to make the history of the American Revolution complete. Perhaps if Wood could have combined his social and economic forces with those of traditional forces his book would have a better claim on legitimacy. Gordon Wood gives an interesting insight into the Revolution. Overall, I find Woods argument to be persuasive and refreshing. There is little doubt that the forces that Wood proclaims as significant in his history of the Revolution are important. However, it is this same concentration on non-traditional forces that leads to my criticism of his book. Smith pg. 6 Wood should not have focused entirely on his commonly overlooked social and economic forces. Instead, he should have combined his insight along with the insight of other traditional forces to give his book a well-rounded theory behind the American Revolution. Word Count: 1498

A Comparison Of Judaism, Islam, & Christianity Essays -

A Comparison Of Judaism, Islam, & Christianity Religion is one of the driving forces behind many of the events and attitudes that have shaped our world. Throughout the centuries, laws have been enacted; cities and countries have been created and destroyed; and wars have been fought, all to promulgate or protect one religion or another. This paper will examine aspects of the three major Western religions of the world: Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. Topics covered will include the origin of all three religions, the view of God held by each tradition, and conflicts. Several of the beliefs of these religions will be examined, such as judgment, and the Trinity. Origin of Judaism The origins of Judaism can be traced back to the stories of the Old Testament, or Tanakh. Although these stories cannot be substantiated by other historical means (there are no historical references to the Hebrews until 1230 BCE) careful examination of the Tanakh indicate that Abraham, the first patriarch of the Jews, lived between 1700-1900 BCE. Abraham, his son Isaac and grandson Jacob are said in the Bible to form the nucleus of the new religion. These patriarchs, along with their wives Sarah, Rebecca, Leah and Rachel (the matriarchs) established their new religion in the land of Canaan. Jacob fathered twelve sons. These men became the leaders of the twelve tribes of Israel. Due to famine in Canaan, these men moved with their families to Goshen, which was located in Egypt. The lot of the Jews in Egypt was not good. About four centuries after the relocation from Canaan to Egypt, the Israelites had become the slaves of the pharaohs, building the massive monuments that are still standing to this day. In the book of Exodus, the new leader of the Jews, Moses, leads the people out of bondage in Egypt. The defining moment in the Jewish tradition occurs when God speaks to Moses and presents him with the Ten Commandments engraved on stone tablets. After forty years, the Jews returned to Canaan, driving out the current occupants and naming the captured city of Jerusalem as the capital. It was here, in the city of David, that the first temple was built. Origin of Christianity At the beginning of the Common Era, Jesus Christ was born in the city of Bethlehem. Very little is known about his childhood. Around the age of thirty, Jesus began his ministry with his baptism by John the Baptist, and the gathering of the twelve disciples. While spreading the gospel, Jesus performed many miracles and healed many of the sick and disabled. Because of his radical beliefs, Jesus ran afoul of the Jewish leaders and the local Roman prefect, Pontius Pilate. He was crucified and resurrected, ascending to Heaven to sit at the right hand of the Father. After being called to serve by a vision of Christ, Apostle Paul (Saul) began to really spread the faith from 48 to 62 CE. Pauls missionary journeys spread the faith throughout the entire Mediterranean Basin by 100 CE. During the reign of the Roman emperor Constantine, Christianity became the official religion of Rome in 313 CE. This is the beginning of what would evolve officially into the Roman Catholic Church within the next few decades. With the fall of the Roman Empire in the west, the western and eastern traditions began to drift apart, and in 1054 excommunicated each other. After western Crusaders ravaged Constantinople in 1204 CE the rift was permanent. In Germany, a new branch of Christianity developed in 1520 CE when Martin Luther expressed doubts over the legitimacy of indulgences and papal infallibility. Excommunicated from the Catholic Church, Luther was responsible for the Protestant Reformation. Origin of Islam In the fortieth year of his life, Muhammad received his revelation from the angel Gabriel in 610 CE. Over the next ten years his mission faced an uphill battle just to survive. The persecution of the Muslims in Mecca under the Quray*censored*es was such that the Hijrah (migration) from Mecca to Medina became necessary in 622 CE. Consolidating his power base in Medina, Muhammad fended off attacks by Mecca and in 630 made a triumphant return to Mecca. In 630 CE the prophet returned triumphant to Mecca with such a large band that the Meccans did not

Narrative Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 3

Narrative - Essay Example In the eighteenth and nineteenth century, racial discrimination was rampant and color of the skin played important role in the society. Through deliberate use of powerful lobby, Whites maintained a racial divide within the society mainly due to financial advantages that they enjoyed over the less privileged colored population, the Native Americans and Afro American who were initially brought as slaves. Education was denied to blacks and they were also not allowed to participate in social activities. This was important issue with Whites because depriving them with education meant that they would not be able to improve their economic status through better jobs and thereby remain unequal socially and economically. By the end of the century, raced based slavery had become a full-fledged tradition amongst the Whites with Africans and non-whites becoming slaves for life. The Pueblo revolt, Cherokee war and Salem witch craft were major events that raised the issue of exploitation of indigenous population and non-whites as slaves. Interestingly, the increased trade and business activities created conflicting interests with the English settlers and resulted into war which was later known as ‘seven years’ war’. It also became the foundation for American revolution and war of independence of American citizens. French settlers were more empathetic to the Native Americans who were recognized as individuals with distinct culture. They also indirectly promoted the cause of independence of the Native Americans. American Revolution (1775-1783) was the major event of eighteenth century that significantly impacted the social dynamics and political geography of the world. It lead to the emergence of America where empowerment of people and democratic process were valued. The efforts to eradicate slavery were made through changes in the

George Frideric Handel Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

George Frideric Handel - Term Paper Example The boy who would later become a renowned musician was born on 23rd February 1685 (Schoelcher 2). He exhibited ardent interest in music from an early age, although his father objected to his determination to pursue music. Handel’s father conformed to the societal opinion during that time. The people of the 17th and 18th century viewed music as a hobby undeserving of been considering a career. People who exhibited too much passion in hobbies earned a negative reputation in the society. The majority of people sought to have a high profile career, explaining why Handel’s father wanted his son to pursue law, which had a higher societal regard. However, despite this resistance from his father, he strived to learn the organ and the clavichord. His mother helped him in discretion, offering him the clavichord. He learned these organs on his own and made good progress. On one occasion, a duke recognized that he had a talent in music after hearing him playing the organ, and took the initiative of pleading his father. The duke’s efforts bore fruit and Handel’s father allowed him to register for music classes. Handel encountered Zacchau as his first music teacher at the Lutheran church in his hometown when he was eight years old. Through the instruction of Zacchau, he registered fast progress in his musical career, such that at 11, he was excelling in playing the harpsichord, violin, and the organ. Moreover, he gained exemplary skills in composition, harmony, and the counterpoint. At this point, Handel’s father exhibited the conviction that his son had acquired sufficient skills in music, and wanted to bring the music classes to a halt. However, when he got home, his father died a factor that compelled him to pursue the wishes of his father and spend the years that followed studying in order to fulfill his father’s wishes. During this time, he also embarked on enhancing his music knowledge by working with the church by playing the organ and cantatas writing. On attaining the age of 18, he decided to pursue music as his career, with an ardent determination to advance his musical skills. After making that decision in his life, he relocated to Hamburg in Germany (Rockstro 65). Handel’s Musical Career When Handel moved to Hamburg, he had made his determination to nurture his talent, and impact the music industry in a diverse way. Hamburg had earned a name as a renowned center in opera music (Mainwaring 44). This attribute attracted the talented Handel to Hamburg. On arrival, he landed a job in an opera house that was very popular in the city to take the role of playing the violin. Handel proved aggressive by seizing every opportunity to exhibit his talent in the playing other instruments such as the harpsichord. For example, he seized the opportunity presented by the absence of a musician to exhibit his talent in playing the harpsichord. Moreover, he established an acquaintance with Johann Mattheson who wa s four years older. Johann Mattheson demonstrated exemplary talent in composition, singing, and defining music theories. Apparently, Handel was hot-tempered, and he was involved in an ugly argument with Mattheson concerning of the operas by Mattheson (Parker 66). That argument compromised their working relationship, and the two no longer worked together. After spending some time in Hamburg, he gained popularity that appealed the prince of Italy, who invited him to Italy. He

Howard Zinn Essay Example for Free

Howard Zinn Essay Howard Zinn was born on December 7 19922 in Brooklyn New York. Zinn was raised in a working-class family in Brooklyn, and flew bombing missions for the United States in World War 2, which experience he uses to shape his opposition to war. Howard Zinn is one of the most respected historians, the author of various books and plays, and a passionate activist for radical change. A clear statement of his nature is his autobiography You Cant Be Neutral on a Moving Train. He is perhaps best known for A Peoples History of the United Sates, which presents American history through the eyes of those outside of the political and economic establishment, like the Native Americans, slaves, women, blacks, etc. In his essay Violence and Human Nature Howard Zinn points that; even if humans are capable of violent behavior, it is social conditions that harness that cruelty. He warns us to steer clear of the widespread notion that humans are biologically predisposed to violence and warfare. Mr. Zinn starts off by using an arsenal of famous thinkers, pointing out their pessimistic views and believes on human behavior. Views based on no concrete evidence that we humans are born with this trait called violence. Zinn starts off using Machiavellis positive view in the The Prince that humans tend to be bad. Zinn add great minds such as Einstein and Freud and their correspondence to illustrate their own views on the subject, and their conclusions that humans are violent by nature. Other scholars are also thrown in to support this traditional view of human nature being evil. The writer goes on with the idea that scientific evidence doesnt proves it, and that is the notion that humans are in nature prone to violence. Howard picks on some scientific fields to show as that there is no evidence of human instinct for the kind of aggressive hostility that characterizes war. He turns to sociobiology, where the Harvard professor E.O Wilson in his book On Human nature answers with a yes on the question Are human beings innately aggressive? and finds his evidence not in his field but as Freud did in History. Wilson goes on to describe that humans are born with such a trait as violence, that we own it to our genes. Zinn counter attacks this with the following, Stephen Jay Gould a colleague of Wilson and a expert in evolution categorically just replies when asked that there no evidence for  such a statement by Wilson. Zinn is starting to show us an interesting pattern, a blueprint that clearly show us that every explanation from those important people look to root their selves with evidence found only in History. Zinn invites us to illustrate why History is being picked as the field from where those people can pull their evidence of Human violence. Its easily proven when you choose humans to be evil, you just need to pick your example, and history is flooded with it. Zinn shows us that there is a down side of it picking on history, because it depends on which historical events you examine to be in your favor. Its dangerous and very biased to follow this trail. Zinn goes on to convince us that our concentration get deflected by the real cause of violence and war. Zinn uses the 1986 international conference of scientists in Spain to express their conclusion on the question of human nature and violent aggression, to lure as to the very point of the whole essay that society has the power to harness this violent instinct in humans, and not our biological makeup. To further straighten his observation, Zinn uses the well-known Milgram experiment. In sum, carefully controlled experiments demonstrate that we follow others more often than we might like to think. However, it also seems to true that we dont always conform. We are more likely to conform when authority figures are close by, and are more likely to express our individuality and dissent when the consequences of our actions are more apparent. Also from the area of anthropology Zinn uses the two tribes of The Forest People and The Mountain People from the studies of Colin Turnbull, to show us what an impact can an out side disturbance have on one tribe, which brought out a violent behavior in them. But the second tribe uninterrupted continued on a gentle and peaceful life. Howard decided to turn our attention from all does academic studies to the war itself. He gives himself as an example to explain war. Zinn argues that he and his fellow soldiers killed as a result of a set of experiences that  brought them to the front lines of war, not because they felt an instinctual compel to do so. He doesnt view the soldiers willingness to go to war as genuine to their human nature but is rather triggered by existing social conditions. This is what is expected from you, the pressure of people around him to do his duty. Zinn recalls being brought up to trust that the nations political leaders would make just and fair choices, and that the world was divided into good and bad countries, his own country being one of the good. He also recalls being trained not to question orders and being reminded that there was no reason to question those orders since they all stemmed from good political leaders and you should obey those people. Ones in the war and having such obedience, produced in him by his society, a soldier easily demonstrates the power of culture in extreme ways, like for example the My Lai Massacre. Where a detachment of units annihilated a whole village consisted only by elderly people, women and children. Zinn decides to show us that in the aftermath of the massacre, GIs as in the case of Charles Hutto said that he did what he was told to do. But we see that also a helicopter offices decides to save as much people as he can from the village below, Howard suggests that men are disposed to war under certain setting. Society should come to turns to this power which it holds over people harnessing this violent instinct and avoid doing so at all costs.

Women and Deception in Homers Odyssey Essay -- Homer, Odyssey Essays

Women and Deception in the Odyssey      Ã‚  Ã‚   As Agamemnon tells Odysseus, â€Å"Let it be a warning even to you. Indulge a woman never, and never tell her all you know. Some things a man may tell, some he should cover up† (Book XI   199).   This is not news to Odysseus, who treats all women with caution ever since he was betrayed by his wife Helen, who acted in a way that defiled all womankind. Agamemnon did not come to this realization all by himself, however; his statement represents the common sentiment that existed throughout all ancient Greece. Even before Odysseus speaks with Agamemnon, he exhibits a similar attitude in his many encounters with women during his long journey home. Every major female character that Odysseus comes across uses deception in one form or another to get the better of him. This being the case, Odysseus fights fire with fire, using his own cunning deception against the evils of womankind.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The first wily female that Odysseus battles wits with is the goddess Kalypso. She is a very deceitful woman, indeed. Kalypso has somehow managed to hide from the gods for 7 years – an unnatural and disrespectable accomplishment. She has been having a secret affair with Odysseus, a mortal, who has been held captive on her island for the... ... Ancient world civilizations date back from 3500-500 BC. Some of the early ancient include Egypt, the Roman Empire, the Baghvad Gita, Mesopotamia and Deities of Warriors to mention a few.. Research conducted by scholars indicate that civilizations did not begin in the west as most people believe. As a matter of fact ancient civilization began from the northern desert and the Mediterranean regions. Civilization was not an event but a process. It therefore did not happen spontaneously but took length of time. There are various ancient civilizations as already mentioned which include Egypt, Mesopotamia, Warriors and Deities in the Near East, India’s Beginnings, Ancient China among others. This paper focuses on each one of them analyzing how each was established. The history of ancient Egypt was characterized by fascination. Egypt is actually of the ancient establishments that may be said to have been rich in civilizations. Some of the memorable fascinations that characterize Egypt’s civilization included; the pyramids, the sphinx, Chariots of the Gods, writings wall paintings and a whole lot of works of art. These among others help us understand the style and way of life in ancient Egypt including their way of life. The geographical location of Egypt is north eastern of the African continent. It took slighting above 300 years. Civilization of ancient Egypt was also characterized of control of resources both human and natural. Some major activities that characterized ancient Mesopotamia included construction of levees to control destructive flooding. Irrigation using canals was also very common. History has it that the southern part of Mesopotamia came to be known as Sumer and thus the residents were known as Sumerians. The Sumerians had civilized systems of administration where they organized themselves in city states. Their place of worship was known as Ziggurat and only priests were allowed since it was a sacred place. Every city state had at lease one temple. Other characteristics of ancient Mesopotamia included was an ancient form of writing known as Cuneiform and Stylus which was instrument made from reed which they used to write. Young boys also attended a school known Edubba after which they graduated to scribes. Also classified among the ancient world civilizations is China whose history of establishment dates back to 15th century BC. The major characteristic of this ancient civilization is the writings which looked like turtle shells. However China is known to have experienced political instability. This may have been as a result of the various dynasties that constituted the whole Kingdom. Originally ancient China was made up of city states which later grew to dynasties. China administration was based on dynasties until recently. In the Near East the Major characteristic was warriors and Deities. The warriors were considered stronger active and more hardworking than other people. There were gods who facilitated the success of war. A Fable by Mark Twain

One of the basic exercises (or progymnasmata) practiced by students of classical rhetoric was the fable—a fictional story meant to teach a moral lesson. What lesson about the nature of perception is contained in A Fable, by American humorist Mark Twain? A Fable by Mark Twain Once upon a time, an artist who had painted a small and very beautiful picture placed it so that he could see it in the mirror. He said, This doubles the distance and softens it, and it is twice as lovely as it was before. The animals out in the woods heard of this through the housecat, who was greatly admired by them because he was so learned, and so refined and civilized, and so polite and high-bred, and could tell them so much which they didnt know before, and were not certain about afterward. They were much excited about this new piece of gossip, and they asked questions, so as to get at a full understanding of it. They asked what a picture was, and the cat explained. It is a flat thing, he said; wonderfully flat, marvelously flat, enchantingly flat and elegant. And, oh, so beautiful! That excited them almost to a frenzy, and they said they would give the world to see it. Then the bear asked: What is it that makes it so beautiful? It is the looks of it, said the cat. This filled them with admiration and uncertainty, and they were more excited than ever. Then the cow asked: What is a mirror? It is a hole in the wall, said the cat. You look in it, and there you see the picture, and it is so dainty and charming and ethereal and inspiring in its unimaginable beauty that your head turns round and round, and you almost swoon with ecstasy. The ass had not said anything as yet; he now began to throw doubts. He said there had never been anything as beautiful as this before, and probably wasnt now. He said that when it took a whole basketful of sesquipedalian adjectives to whoop up a thing of beauty, it was time for suspicion. It was easy to see that these doubts were having an effect upon the animals, so the cat went off offended. The subject was dropped for a couple of days, but in the meantime, curiosity was taking a fresh start, and there was a revival of interest perceptible. Then the animals assailed the ass for spoiling what could possibly have been a pleasure to them, on a mere suspicion that the picture was not beautiful, without any evidence that such was the case. The ass was not troubled; he was calm, and said there was one way to find out who was in the right, himself or the cat: he would go and look in that hole, and come back and tell what he found there. The animals felt relieved and grateful and asked him to go at once--which he did. But he did not know where he ought to stand; and so, through error, he stood between the picture and the mirror. The result was that the picture had no chance, and didnt show up. He returned home and said: The cat lied. There was nothing in that hole but an ass. There wasnt a sign of a flat thing visible. It was a handsome ass, and friendly, but just an ass, and nothing more. The elephant asked: Did you see it good and clear? Were you close to it? I saw it good and clear, O Hathi, King of Beasts. I was so close that I touched noses with it. This is very strange, said the elephant; the cat was always truthful before--as far as we could make out. Let another witness try. Go, Baloo, look in the hole, and come and report. So the bear went. When he came back, he said: Both the cat and the ass have lied; there was nothing in the hole but a bear. Great was the surprise and puzzlement of the animals. Each was now anxious to make the test himself and get at the straight truth. The elephant sent them one at a time. First, the cow. She found nothing in the hole but a cow. The tiger found nothing in it but a tiger. The lion found nothing in it but a lion. The leopard found nothing in it but a leopard. The camel found a camel, and nothing more. Then Hathi was wroth, and said he would have the truth, if he had to go and fetch it himself. When he returned, he abused his whole subjectry for liars, and was in an unappeasable fury with the moral and mental blindness of the cat. He said that anybody but a near-sighted fool could see that there was nothing in the hole but an elephant. MORAL, BY THE CAT You can find in a text whatever you bring, if you will stand between it and the mirror of your imagination. You may not see your ears, but they will be there.
